Ranking of the Red Fort in Delhi
You might be surprised to see the famous Red Fort ranked only number 4 in our list of Delhi's top attractions. Most other lists of Delhi's must-sees will mention it as the city's most important heritage site. Actually, the Red Fort deserves the top position in the hitlist. But here is the point: Three other attractions in Delhi also deserve to be the winner in a competition "what's most worth seeing in Delhi?". Yes, the Red Fort is one of the favourites. But it's not unchallenged. So why do we rank (not rate) three other places of interest higher?
To be honest, the Red Fort in Agra is even more attractive than that of Delhi. We simply did not want to give the number one position for Delhi to a site that is only number 2 when compared to another city. The same applies to Humayun's Tomb. It's great. It would be the most celebrated monument of its kind... if there would not be the Taj Mahal in Agra. But two of Delhi's attractions are definitely the number one when compared to other cities in India, namely the Qutb Minar and the Friday Mosque. The former is the largest minaret and belongs to the first great mosque of the subcontinent, the latter is the largest and most iconic mosque of India till the present day. We chose Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque in Old Delhi, to be our number-one travel highlight of Delhi, as it's both an unsurpassed heritage site and: a living monument. |
