In short: Colombo and the Western Province are Sri Lanka's only metropolitan area. The most attractive heritage destinations are in the Cultural Triangle in the north-central part of the island. The tea highlands form the south-central inland region. Peak season for beach holidays at the lush green southwestern coastline is from Christmas to Easter, whereas the northern summer months are the best season for east coast resorts. The most visited wildlife parks are in the southeast, but the famous elephant gathering takes place in the abovementioned Cultural Triangle. The very north of is the heartland of Sri Lanka's Tamil culture.
