Rafting seasons in Nepal
In general, the best times for both rafting and kayaking on rivers in Nepal are from
A) mid March to mid June and B) September to begin of December. The northern hemisphere spring season is highly recommendable for rafting. April is best for beginners, as this period is extremely dry and therefore less lower water flows, which generally means the rapids are easier. The rivers rise in May due to pre-monsoon winds increading snowmelt in the mountains. Expeditions in the pre-monsoon period require an experienced rafting team with an intimate knowledge of the respective river.
The northern summer months are the monsoon season in Nepal. River rafting is too dangerous then due to the large amounts of waters. The northern winter months are too cold and icy. In July and August rivers usually can carry ten times more water thab in April, even up to 60 times the low-water levels. Only parts of the Trisuli, Seti and Upper Sunkoshi are passable for those with advanced skulls during the monsoon season. September is the begin of the second rafting season in Nepal. However, flows are still high immediately after the monsoon season due to the retarded run-off from the mountains. In September rapids are up to one grade higher than in April. Mid October to November is the second high season for white water rafting activities in Nepal, also recommendable for beginners. The winter season between mid December and mid March is too cold for rafting adventures. The rivers can be icy. |
